Obituary:
Hartland, ME-Clifton H. Sprague, 91, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at Sanfield Rehabilitation and Living Center.
He was born in Winthrop, Maine on August 15, 1917, the son of Harold and Hazel (Towns) Sprague. He married Rachel Ham on October 19, 1934 and together they raised their family.
Clifton claimed to have had three-fourteen year careers; one in the Hartland Tannery, one for Baxter Bros. canning, and one with Bowman-Littlefield Construction. He was a volunteer firefighter for the town of Hartland for over 60 years. He was also an attendant for the Hartland/St. Albans Ambulance, a special police officer with the Somerset County Sheriff's Department, and helped with the area food bank. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and a long time member of the Grace Linn United Methodist Church in Hartland.
Clifton was a chauffeur for those who wanted to attend a band or barbershop concert, a play, or just to go to brunch after church. People in town knew that he was willing to drive them if they needed a ride to a doctor's appointment or just to shop. He was available.
He is survived by his son, Earl Sprague and his wife, Lois, of Camden; his daughters, Elin Moss of Porter, TX and Sharon Heald and her husband, Halsen, of Riverside, TX; 7 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; 5 step great grandchildren; four half-sisters, Shirley Talbort of Port Charlotte, FL, Helen Vigue of Waterville, Cindy Cauffman of Plattsburg, NY, and Julie Gerry of Unity, ME, and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Rachel, in 1993, and his son-in-law, Bob Moss, in 2007.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00am, August 8, 2009 at the Grace Linn United Methodist Church, 8 Seekins Street in Hartland with the Pastor Elizabeth Bailey-Mitchell officiating. A committal service will follow at the Pine Grove Cemetery, Route 152, Hartland.
For those planning an expression of sympathy, the Sprague family suggests memorial donations to either Grace Linn United Methodist Church, 8 Seekins Street, Hartland, ME 04943 or to the Hartland Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 280, Hartland, ME 04943.
